6 Points of Interest on the Grand Strand That Are Away From the Beachy Path

It’s not like you’re ordering a cheeseburger at a seafood restaurant. Going to Myrtle Beach and doing something decidedly unbeachy can be fun. Beyond the shoreline, this town has lots to offer.

We’ve put together a few away-from-the-sand destinations you should check out on your next trip. Explore for a day! You’ll find some treasures for sure.

1. Brookgreen Gardens

It’s an oasis of themed gardens and American figurative sculptures near Murrells Inlet. See animals native to the Lowcountry, and learn the rich history of the region’s rice plantations. Through the new year, don’t miss Night of a Thousand Candles. Imagine 2,800 hand-lit candles and sparkling lights illuminating these beautiful grounds.

2. Huntington State Park

Also in Murrells Inlet, this park is a haven for alligators, sea turtles, and abundant birdlife. It’s close to the beach, yet lightyears away, with opportunities to kayak on the salt marsh. Enjoy incredible views, walk a trail, attend a program, and more.

3. Atalaya

This quirksome castle in Huntington State Park is loaded with history and photo ops. It’s mysterious, a cool place once the winter home to an industrialist and a sculptor, circa 1931. The couple designed it with influence from Spanish Moor architecture.

4. Everything Under The Sun Flea Market & Consignment

The wares you’ll find here support the claim in the name, and it’s a great place to walk around and peruse. Clothes, comics, Pokemon cards … this place has it all, at a bargain price. There are two Grand Strand locations, and you can check listings online.

5. Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

See marine life up close without getting your feet wet. The kids will love being able to touch a live stingray (and so will you!) It’s two stories of incredible sights. Check out Planet Jellies, Penguin Playhouse, Cargo Hold Gift Shop, and more.

6. Little Pigs Bar-B-Q

It’s a simple yet spectacular joint that cranks out some of the area’s tastiest smoked pork and homemade fixin’s. (The baked beans are phenomenal). Get some hushpuppies with honey butter to go with your Jumbo Sandwich. Or choose a beef brisket plate and mac-and-cheese. You can’t go wrong.
