You may or may not remember this yourself, but being a tween can be rough. That age between the idyll of childhood and the budding independence of the teenage years is tricky. A 12-year old may be sensitive about activities that seem like they’re for smaller kids—or worse—babies. And yet, they’re probably not mature enough to be set free.
Fortunately, there are plenty of fun things to do in Myrtle Beach that are fun enough that the whole family will be happy to partake, even tweens. Here are a few favorites:
1. Dinner and a Show at Medieval Times
Kings and queens, horses and sword fights. They’re cooler than ever, thanks perhaps in part to some popular television shows. And Medieval Times has all the fun, and it’s appropriate for the whole family. The drama comes in the form of a high-energy show that’s served up with a feast fit for a king. Kids and tweens love it, and mom and dad can even get swept up into the action and fun.
Be sure to check the website for specials, including “Dads Free” this week for father’s day with at least one full-priced admission.
2. The beach
Don’t underestimate the power of the beach. Tweens might enjoy hanging out on the beach more than ever, and even have more patience for relaxing. If you really want to score some points with your tween, bring a portable boombox and let him or her play DJ.
3. Check out Alligator Adventure
This Barefoot Landing adventure park has plenty of cool animals to check out—though of course gators are the star. There are also wild cats (including Siberian tigers), crocodiles, amazing birds from emus to owls, lemurs and even kangaroos. Be sure to catch the alligator live feedings if you’re around in the warmer season, from about mid-April through mid-October, as the gators leap out of the water for a bite. There are also alligator handling and snake handling shows.
4. Shop, shop, shop
Whether you provide a shopping allowance or help your tween plan for vacation by encouraging him or her to save up babysitting money before you leave town, there’s a good chance your kids will be interested in shopping. Try Broadway at the Beach for a wide selection of fun gift shops and souvenirs as well as an array of entertainment, or just stroll the shopping options at the oceanfront Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade.
5. Mini golf
Myrtle Beach is one of the mini golf capitals of the world, and everyone in the family can enjoy a game. Challenge each other, make the best player in your family take on a handicap like one-handed putting, and enjoy some quality time together!
